Vice President for Guest Engagement (Full Time)

Position:  The Virginia Historical Society seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Vice President for Guest Engagement.  This individual serves as a part of the VHS Executive Team, reports directly to the President & CEO, and is responsible for all aspects of guest access and engagement, including management of guest-facing staff and volunteers as well as oversight of key functions like ticketing, retail, public programs, and special events. The vice president also directs all VHS educational programs, including onsite student programs, distance learning, Virginia History Day, and teacher engagement.  The vice president is the regular liaison between the Guest Engagement Division (approx. 14 paid and 50 unpaid) and the VHS Board of Trustees, and is the VHS’s chief guest advocate.  The vice president manages Division operations, including budgets, planning, and reporting.  

Critical projects upon the selected candidate’s arrival will include the creation of new and popular public events and earned income opportunities. The vice president will also play a key role in institutional planning, including the creation of a new strategic plan, which, among many important initiatives, will focus on increasing earned income, driving vibrancy and activity, and strengthening visitation and public interest overall.

Qualifications: Graduate degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Tourism and Hospitality Management, or closely related fields, or an undergraduate degree combined with exemplary experience; strong leadership, people management and organizational skills; experience in constituent stewardship; strong public speaking ability; thorough knowledge of industry best practices; proven creativity and resourcefulness; thorough understanding of events and retail management.  

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience; benefits package.
