2010 J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., Lecture features Sandra Day O'Connor
The 18th annual J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., Lecture will take place on October 19. This year's lecture, "Reflections of a Supreme Court Justice," will be delivered by Sandra Day O'Connor, former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Organized Labor in Virginia explores how struggle changed the workplace
Opening Labor Day—Monday, September 6—the VHS presents a new exhibition that explores the evolution of organized labor in Virginia, from pre-union contracts and apprenticeship agreements in the early 19th century through the 1950s, when the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO) merged in order to become even more powerful and effective in advancing conditions for working people. Rockabilly music made in the Commonwealth explored in new exhibition at the VHS
Virginia Rocks! The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth—a traveling exhibition organized by the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum of Ferrum College—looks at the more than 60 artists and bands from all over the state who cut 45 rpm rockabilly records in small recording studios and radio stations in the 1950s and early 1960s. The annual Museum Stores of Richmond Holiday Shoppers Fair will be at the VHS this year. Fifteen area museums are participating in the event, which takes place Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6 from 9:30 am to 5 pm. VHS Exhibit Features Bizarre, Weird, and Just Plain Odd Items from the Collection
Disassembled skull bones. A hair wreath. An infant's smallpox scab. Tree fungus art. These are not items that most visitors would expect to see when visiting the VHS. VHS joins Blue Star Museums program
This summer the VHS joins more than 600 museums across the United States participating in the Blue Star Museums program by offering free admission to active duty military personnel and their families. The Blue Star Museums are free Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, through Labor Day, September 6, 2010, to show their appreciation for those who are serving this nation. At the VHS from June 1 through September 5, military personnel will also receive free admission to Banner Lectures and Gallery walks as well as a free 'Story of Virginia' exhibition catalog. Upcoming exhibition focuses on the Civil War in Virginia
Using original objects, interactive technology, and state-of-the-art audiovisual programs, An American Turning Point: The Civil War in Virginia relates the personal experiences of the free and enslaved men, women, and children of wartime Virginia. An American Turning Point is a signature program of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission.

VHS is offering free admission in 2010!
In a bold move at the November 18, 2009, board meeting, the VHS trustees voted to waive admission fees next year. Effective January 2, 2010, it will not cost guests any money to visit the VHS museum or research library. (12/8/09) Press release |
