National History Day Contest Information

How to Register:

The National History Day contest will be held from Sunday, June 11, 2017 through Thursday, June 15, 2017.  You must have won 1st or 2nd place in your respective district to be eligible to compete at the national-level History Day contest.  The registration deadline is May 16, 2017 at 11:59pm.  Please register here: http://nhd.org/register

The University of Maryland also requires students to complete a medical form to participate on campus.  The medical form deadline is the same as the registration deadline, May 16, 2017.  Students can complete the form at: https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/SE/?SID=SV_0cf4eDsvCLz8sVT.

The National History Day registration fee is $110/per student and $45/per teacher.

Where to Park:

NHD strongly encourages everyone to pre-purchase a parking permit for the national contest.  The National History Day office has no control over campus parking, parking rates or parking citations.  If you choose to pre-purchase a permit, go to http://my.parkingsoft.com/umd and select the Buy Parking tab.  Find the drop down menu to select History Day parking permits. Once you have chosen your permit and click the Buy Parking button, you may complete your purchase without setting up an account. Simply select "Continue As Guest.”  When your purchase is complete, you will receive an e-mail with a PDF of the permit.  You are responsible for printing out the permit and displaying it appropriately.

Short term parking for registration is available in Union Lane Garage across from Stamp Student Union on Saturday and Sunday.  Late registrants on Monday or Tuesday will need to use visitor parking.  The closest locations are the Stadium Drive Garage and Paint Branch Visitor lot. Since parking is limited around the center of campus, guests staying in residence halls are strongly urged to park in the lots as indicated on the summer guest parking permit closest to their lodging and walk to the competition sites.

Thursday Closing Awards Ceremony

Due to the construction closure in Regents Drive Garage, a significant number of faculty and staff will be relocated to the Xfinity Center parking lots. Lots 9 and 11 that in previous years had been available for NHD parking will be reserved for UMD faculty/staff displaced by the Regents Drive Garage construction.  Commuters and spectators attending the closing ceremony on Thursday that have pre-purchased their permits (either the week-long inclusive permit or the one-day pass valid for Thursday only) may park in lots 4b and the Terrapin Trail Garage.  This parking is limited and expected to fill.  Overflow parking for those with pre-purchased permits is Stadium Drive Garage or Lot 1.  There will not be on-site sales for parking permits at the Xfinity center for the 2017 Awards Ceremony. On-site permit sales will be available in parking Lot 1d Thursday morning.  There will be shuttles running from Lot 1 to Xfinity.  We encourage residents to walk or shuttle to the Xfinity Center and return to their vehicles following the ceremony due to the limited parking available near the Xfinity Center.

Cars on campus must either display an appropriate parking permit or park in paid hourly visitor parking areas. It is especially important for the safety and security of all visitors that cars do not park in areas designated as fire lanes, handicapped spaces, or service and courier pass areas. Parking in roadways, pedestrian walkways, or on landscaped areas is also prohibited.

Where to Stay:

Participants can stay on campus in dorm housing or choose to stay off campus at one of the surrounding hotels.  Please see the flyers attached to this e-mail regarding both option.  If you choose to stay on campus in dorm housing, please let me know.  The National History Day office would like us to send housing/room assignments in advance so we can ensure everyone is together.
